K53 Driver Test

The K53 Driver Test in Cape Town composes of 3 modules

The main aim of the K53 driver test is to ensure safety to all public roads.

1) The First part of the K53 driver test is:
The Pre Trip Inspection.

2) Secondly the Learner gets tested on.
his or her Parking abilities.

3) The Third and last part of the test is Driving on public roads.

Number 1:
Before getting into and starting the car.

NB: The Examiner tests the road worthiness of the car before or during the pre trip inspection. If the car don’t meet the road worthy requirements then the test ends. So make sure to check that the tires has sufficient Tread pattern and all lights are in working order.

The learner needs to say the Pre Trip Inspection:

No leaks and obstructions under the car
No cracks in side mirror
No cracks in front windshield
Both wipers are working
Tires checked for thread and pressure
Front lenses and reflectors are working and not damaged
Under the bonnet, the oil water and brake fluid has been checked and the fan belt is secure.
Tires checked for thread and pressure
Side mirror not damaged
Fuel cap is locked and secure
Rear wind screen has no cracks and damages
Rear lenses and reflectors are working and not damaged.

Inside
All 4 doors locked and secure
Seat belts fitted and working
Rear view mirror and seat is adjusted
Hand break up and car in neutral
No obstructions by feet and pedals

Starting procedure
Gauges and warning lights working and car has an automatic choke.

The Parking or Yard Test
Please note that because cars comes in different shapes and sizes the technique taught by different instructors might vary according to the vehicle being used but the K53 observations stays the same.

The yard test consists of:

1Three point turn/ Turn in the road.
2Uphill pull away
3Parallel Parking: which needs to be done from the left and right.
4 Alley Docking Parking.

You in the Block

1. Half observation to the right

Rear view Mirror; Side Mirror; Blind spot

2. Signal by indicating to the direction you are turning.

3. Put car into gear and get clutch control (Keep clutch control)

All round observations:

Blind spot; Side Mirror; Rear view Mirror; Side Mirror; Blind spot

4. Drop hand brake and move forward. When side mirror is in line with the end of the

block, lock your steering all the way to the right.

5. When almost @ curb, straighten the wheel turning twice to the left. Stop before the curb.

Half observation to the left

7. Put car into revers gear and get clutch control (Keep clutch control)

All round observations:

Blind spot; Side Mirror; Rear view Mirror; Side Mirror; Blind spot

8. Lock steering all the way left and when shoulder is in line with broken line straighten the wheel with 2 turns right.

9. Stop when shoulder is in middle of the block.

10. Signal by indicating to the direction you are turning.

11. Put car into gear and get clutch control (Keep clutch control)

All round observations:

12. Drop hand brake and move forward.

13. Turn right and straighten into lane. Stop before the line.

You in the Block

1. Half observation into the direction you intend to turn:

Rearview Mirror; Side Mirror; Blind spot

2. Signal by indicating to the direction you are turning.

3. Put car into gear and get clutch control (Keep clutch control)

All round observations:

Blind spot; Side Mirror; Rear view Mirror; Side Mirror; Blind spot

4. Drop hand brake and reverse.

5. When shoulder is in line with second pole check opposite blind spot and lock wheel.

6. Look in side mirror and when side of car in line with 3 poles, straighten the wheel and reverse in but stop when should is in line with the middle pole

K53 Driver test: Road Test

Approaching a stop street

(Intending on moving off to the left or right ahead)

1. Half observation into the direction you intend to turn:

Rearview Mirror; Side Mirror; Blind spot

2. Signal by indicating to the direction you are turning.

3. Look in your rear view mirror before applying brakes to slow down.

4. Put your clutch in and stop behind the stop line.

5. After the car has come to a dead stop, pull up your handbrake and put the car in first gear

Moving off

Moving Off from a stop street while car is in 1st gear and handbrake is up.

1. Look left, right and straight ahead to check if intersection is clear of approaching

traffic and it is safe to move off.

2. Put car into gear and get clutch control (Keep clutch control)

3. All round observations:

Blind spot; Side Mirror; Rearview Mirror; Side Mirror; Blind spot

4. Release hand brake and move off without rolling back.

5. Look at your rear view mirror and check both sides of the intersection again for

oncoming traffic.

6. If turning into an intersection, check your blind spot in direction you are turning before

rotating the steering wheel.

Approaching a stop street

(Intending on moving off straight ahead)

1. Look in your rear view mirror before applying brakes to slow down.

2. Stay driving in gear you are currently in and slow down gradually.

3. Put your clutch in before the stop line and the car will come to a dead stop.

4. After the car has come to a dead stop, pull up your handbrake and put the car in first gear.

Changing lanes

1. Half observation into the direction you intend to turn:

Rearview Mirror; Side Mirror; Blind spot

2. Signal / Indicate

3. Check blind spot again before changing lanes.
